Developing SecondBrain

Johan and Maciek have been busy all day sketching out the features for the next stage of Second Brain. As you can see on the walls behind them, there is lots of stuff waiting to be added into your favourite online content library.

Lots of users have been providing us with great ideas over at the Second Brain helpcenter, and we are choosing from an ever-growing list of excellent suggestions for the beta 3.

If you are missing a feature or a service in Second Brain, tell us, and we’ll try to find a way to add it. Either use the helpcenter, the feedback form, or send us an email. If you send us a postcard or a fax, we promise to out it up on our walls.

One of the most challenging task with the development of Second Brain is to choose what services to add next. There are really a lot of good ones out there, and it seems to be a new suggestion from one of the many awesome brainiacs in our inbox every day.

We’ve made a poll, so you can vote for your favourite feature, but if you’re missing a feature, let us know, and we’ll try to add it when we can.

What service should we add next?

The Top Secondbrainers Prevail!

After a week of intense voting and friendly competition, the Top Secondbrainers have been decided by you – the Secondbrain community. All ten finalists are winners of course, but the super cool Macbook Air goes to none other than the self proclaimed Greatest Living American - The Dude Dean.

It was a close race between Dean, CompWoman and Katti all the way, and all three won some super cool prizes.

The other ten finalists won Amazon gift certificates and placed in the contest in the following order from 4th to 10th place. JK, HerrGraff, Bs, Diptychal, Thlom, Cpeckens and Inni. You guys did a great job and as we said , the race was very close. Your contributions have added great value to our community.

We want to congratulate all the participants for submitting some fantastic content to the community, and especially the ten finalists for their victory. This has been a fun and interesting contest, and we will be rewarding the community in similar ways as occasions dictate. For now we hope that all the winners enjoy their well deserved prizes. We will be contacting all the winners personally over the next few days to fill them in on the details of receiving their prizes.

Secondbrains Vie For The Title - Best Brainiac!

Now that the release of Beta 2.0 is out, the contest for all those great prizes is winding to a close too. So many users have added so much great content and we are so proud to be able to reward some of you with these tokens of our appreciation. The Macbook Air is of course the most sought after prize and we thought we would give everyone an update on who is ahead for the big win.

In other news, you guys might notice that the voting aspect of the contest is powered by the score widget from JS-Kit. Secondbrain has been exploring collaborations like this with friends internationally in order to provide the very best tools and services available for our users. Whether we build our own tools or integrate the best examples from elsewhere, the goal is the same - provide the best for our Brainiacs, period.

We are exploring a wide range of tools that will allow our users unparalleled utility in sharing, broadcasting, manipulating, searching and essentially manipulating their content on Secondbrain. Stay tuned for further developments, but for now check out the current top leaders below in the race to the finish to win these fantastic prizes.

The Dude Dean

The Dude Dean (aka. The Greatest Living American Dude as he describes himself) continues to lead - can he hold on until the finish line? If he does, not only will he be the self proclaimed “Greatest American Dude”, he may well become the greatest living Brainiac too.

Compwoman

Compwoman is on a rampage coming from behind into 2nd place and going strong to the finish. Compwoman will be living proof that there is a lot more to a name than we think if she wins the MacBook. What better fitting contestant and prize could there be?

Katti

Katti, one of the early favorites has slipped a bit in these later stages but don’t count her out yet! Katti does not really have a mustache as her avatar suggests, but with a few more of your votes she could be smiling rather than sticking her tongue out at us.

Bs profile

Bs is currently in 4th and making headway, but the hill is a steep one. 80 or so votes does not seem like a lot to garner given this is the Internet. It seems like that if a goofy video on Digg could get 1000 votes, then Bs should be able to be vaulted into the lead easily, huh?

There are two users tied for 5th place currently, Diptychal and Cpeckens with 20 votes each. The contest ends on Thursday, so everything is still up for grabs. So, vote for your favorites and grab some of their great content while you are at it. As always, let us know if you have ideas or feedback that can help make Secondbrain the “end all” development you dream of. Someone’s dream laptop is about to become a reality because of you.

Contest Finalists Are Here - Vote For Your Favorite Secondbrainiac!

macbook air contest. We just launched our Beta 2 Version and it is time to decide who will be the top SecondBrainer and take away the bling-bling.

The top 10 SecondBrainiacs have been selected based on an algorithm that computed the top users by their contributions to the community (the number of posts, the number of comments, the number of followers, the number of people they have invited and the number of collections they have made.)

All ten finalists are winners and are guaranteed a prize. The only question remaining is; “who will get which prize?” - and that is why we need your help. We decided to let the SecondBrain community vote on the ultimate winners because it is the users who make Secondbrain what it is, and because the winner is really representative of the whole community.

All you have to do is visit the SecondBrain libraries of these finalists and give a “thumbs up” to the user you feel is best overall. Each of the 10 finalists will receive one of the prizes, and only one. Which one gets the Macbook Air, the Xbox 360 or one of the Amazon gift cards is completely up to you – the community.

So, vote for your favorite SecondBrainer, and spread the word to make sure he or she gets the deserved credit for their contribution to SecondBrain.

This has been a lot of fun and we hope all of you are enjoying the competition and the great content being added. We hope that everyone will examine the users who make finalist and also take a look at what they have created too. Just think, everything you aggregate on SecondBrain really adds so much to the whole community. This is how we build the largest online content library in the world - together - a step at a time. We want to thank you all so much for your efforts and for helping us wind-up one of the coolest online contests ever. Click on the button below to go to the voting page!

Please note: Only registered users can vote, and you can only vote once. However, you can of course invite people to SecondBrain and ask them to vote for you or your friends. Any attempts at gaming the vote will result in disqualification, and the next most prolific user will receive that awarded prize.

Introducing the SecondBrain team, part I

Name: Audun Kjelstrup
Role in SecondBrain: Community Manager
SecondBrain profile : audungk.secondbrain.com

To me, SecondBrain is all about the good content that is out there. A while ago, as I was working on html-emails for SecondBrain, I stumbled across katti’s collection on html-email. Needless to say, it saved me quite a few working hours. In my spare time, I shoot photos with an old beat-up film camera, but videos like this one from chriscon makes think about picking up the dSLR again.

And it goes on. Browsing secondbrain.com/explore is probably the most fun procrastination I do while at the office.

Apart from SecondBrain, I’m a student at the University of Oslo, working on a bachelors degree in Digital Media. As a intern at SecondBrain, I get to do lots of different stuff, everything from html/css via sketching in Photoshop, to answering emails and handling the support. Being on the frontline talking to the users is probably the best part of my job, and though 50-or-so emails every day might sound boring, the rewarding dialog that I get to have with our users makes it totally worth it.

When I’m not in front of the computer, I enjoy cooking. If you have a nice collections with recipes, why not share it with me?  I know there is a least one more foodie on SecondBrain:-)

Updated Secondbrain Browser Buttons for Firefox 3.0

Some of you who are quick to download and try out the newest stuff on the web probably already downloaded the new Firefox 3.0 and noticed that our belowed browser bookmarks were incompatible. I got a few reports about this yesterday.

But fortunately  my client side developer, Jakub, was quick to react and spent today upgrading our browser buttons to work with Firefox 3.0 as well.

You can download it from secondbrain.com by logging in and selecting Dashboard -> Install bookmarklet, or by following this direct download link.

If some of you are still (!) on the good old FF2.0, you can of course go ahead and upgrade today to make sure that it works when you decide to move to FF3.0.

And, for the IE users out there, we are going to start working on some browser buttons for you as well:-)

An open letter to Ross and Dan

To Ross and Dan, Friendfeed’s best and brightest interns.

    My SecondBrain Office

Welcome to my humble intern office here at SecondBrain. No bikes. No couches. This is where the summer interning gets done. To brighten my rather grey days answering support email and fetching coffee, I hereby challenge you to a duel. My contract with SecondBrain ends in August, and I have managed to get a carte blanche to duel from now and ’till the sun goes down at August 31.

Could this be fun? Are you up for a challenge? Let me know, and we can discuss rules and such over a cup of virtual coffee sometimes.

    Yours humbly,

    Audun
    Summer Intern, Second Brain

    New quick intro video

Johan and Audun made another quick intro video. Check out our 90 seconds get started with Secondbrain presentation.

The video only shows the basic features of S|B. We will make a Part II of this series in a few weeks that shows the full potential.

    Secondbrain media coverage in Norway

Until last week, we’ve focused mostly on international media coverage. But last Thursday, dinside.no published an interview with us and this kick-started our Norwegian launch of S|B.

Dinside.no is one of the largest online news portals in Norway. The did a pretty thorough article on us, with pictures and a video interview. The video thing was a “first time” for me and felt a bit awkward, but I think with a little bit of editing it will be OK. The rest of the video interview will be live on Klikktv.no on Friday. The reponse on the dinside.no was great and the server couldn’t handle the load. But we got a new server online on Friday with a quad core processor and lots of RAM, so that should help, at least for another week or two.

Then on Saturday, Finansavisen, the largest financial newspaper in Norway, did an article on us. They wrote about our plans to raise money to take Secondbrain to the next level in their paper edition.

And finally on Sunday, vg.no - Norway’s largest tabloid did a post on us. The article was short and sweet, but they didn’t include a link to secondbrain.com in the article - something which I find a bit strange for an article online about something online… I guess it’s their editorial policy and we are more than happy to be introduced to the VG readers.

The Secondbrain Team is very exited about all the Norwegian users that are joining. In fact, we were a bit surprised about the response. We will try to further fuel the momentum in Norway this week as well as focusing on international media for the Beta 2 launch on Thursday. Maybe some of the Norwegian media will do a follow-up?
